ThunderCloud Subs employee spotlight: Nathan Wolfers’ funky tie-dye art

Tie-dye master, family man, and manager of ThunderCloud’s Georgetown location Nathan Wolfers is taking the neighborhood sub shop’s funk-a-delic vibes to the next level with his brilliant tie-dye art.

He made the massive wall of tie-dye curtains at the Georgetown store with six separate panels, each 10 feet tall, and all done by hand. The project took him about 20 hours to complete. And if you’ve ever seen a tie-dye ThunderCloud T-shirt around town or on one of our employees at your neighborhood shop, it’s Nathan’s handwork. He uses a stencil to screen-print the logo on the shirts and then dyes each one by hand so they’re all slightly different. Read more

Texas Book Festival announces new literary director

6P_TexasBookFestJulieHighResFinal0201-1The Texas Book Festival has named a new literary director. Julie Wernersbach, who served as marketing director of the largest independent bookstore in Texas for the past five years, will start her new job as the Festival’s literary director later this month.

Wernersbach will be responsible for creating and implementing the TBF’s year-round literary programming including the annual Festival, which is one of the largest and most prestigious book festivals in the country and is held each fall at the State Capitol in downtown Austin.

At BookPeople, Wernersbach plans more than 300 author events each year and oversees public relations, marketing, website, and social media strategies. Working closely with publishers, Wernersbach has planned events featuring Elvis Costello, Jimmy Carter, Jonathan Franzen, Isabel Allende, Stephen King, Donna Tartt, Lena Dunham, and many others. Emancipet’s popular Sit Stay Day returns; Valentine’s-inspired kits now available to order!

Animal lovers and foodies, rejoice! Emancipet’s sixth annual Sit Stay Day, a unique fundraiser that lets pets and their humans stay in and enjoy homegrown Austin treats while raising money for pets in need, returns for 2016.

Dozens of local businesses donate gourmet food and drink items, gift cards, and other goodies that are assembled into 250 kits and delivered to homes and offices before Valentine’s Day. Read more

Emancipet Houston hires new leader; Six-month-old nonprofit seeking first brick and mortar location

Emancipet Houston, the nonprofit, low-cost veterinary services provider which opened last June, has hired a vice president to lead the expanding organization, which is also in the process of seeking its first brick-and-mortar location.

Kelly McCann comes to Emancipet from the Alzheimer’s Association, where she was chief program officer for four years. Previously, she worked in government relations for Gilead Sciences, and as chief executive officer of the AIDS Foundation of Houston. McCann has a bachelor’s of science in psychology from Sam Houston State University and has done graduate work in psychology at Texas A&M and Sam Houston universities. Read more

ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot raises $295K; cumulative donation to Caritas nearly $3 million

The owners of ThunderCloud Subs recently presented Caritas of Austin with a check for $295,000, the entirety of the proceeds from the 25th anniversary ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot. This year’s check brings the Trot’s cumulative 25-year donation to nearly $3 million—$2,783,375, to be exact. Read more
